Career-Technical Education

The academy program at Dorothy M. Wallace COPE Center allows for smaller learning communities within a school that draw on the interests that students have in learning about the world or work. Learning within an academy will also motivate students to take their core courses more seriously.

The academy needs to be connected to interested employers in the community who will provide the support needed: advisory board members, speakers, field trip hosts, mentors, and internships. And it needs to be an industry that is healthy and growing, so there will be jobs when academy graduates are ready for them.

CAREER ACADEMIES

Career academies are small, personalized learning communities within a high school that select a subset of students and teachers for a two-three-, or four-year span. Students enter the academy through a voluntary process they must apply and be accepted with parental knowledge and support. At DMW COPE Center our career academy includes the following essential elements:A small learning community: A college-prep curriculum with a career theme: Partnerships with employers, the community, and higher education.
